Earnings dynamics and intergenerational transmission of skill

چکیده
This paper develops and estimates a two-factor model of intergenerational skill transmission when earnings inequality reflects differences in individual skills other non-skill shocks. We consider heterogeneity both initial growth rates, allowing variation to change over the lifecycle. Using administrative tax data on two linked generations Canadians covering 37 years, we exploit covariances log (at different ages) across within identify estimate correlation structure for lifecycle profiles, dynamics low elasticities (IGEs) Canada; however, IGEs are typically 2–3 times larger due considerable (and persistent) conditional skills. Both decline more recent child cohorts lower children born younger fathers. Intergenerational rates explains up 40% children’s variation. Skills become important determinant first part workers’ careers; becomes less as age, because not well-predicted by parental Parents’ equally determinants skills, largely strongly influence Finally, study mobility 35 largest cities Canada, documenting extent which vary with local vs. instability.

Intergenerational Mobility in Earnings and Occupational Status
A large literature has measured the regression to the mean in earnings and occupational status. One conclusion of this literature is that earnings regress to the mean more rapidly than status. This paper provides a theoretical model for intergenerational mobility in both status and earnings and examines its implications empirically. We consider the theoretical implications of parental investmen...
متن کاملIntergenerational Earnings Mobility and Preferences for Redistribution
Intergenerational Earnings Mobility and Preferences for Redistribution This paper analyzes the extent to which intergenerational upward and downward mobility in earnings are related to individuals’ preferences for redistribution. A novel survey question from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study – whether the taxes paid by unskilled workers are too high, adequate or too low – are used to elicit...

Intergenerational Mobility, Human Capital Transmission and the Earnings of Second-Generation Immigrants in Sweden We compare the intergenerational earnings mobility of immigrants with natives in Sweden. We find an overall convergence in average earnings between immigrants and natives. This convergence hides a divergence in average earnings between groups of immigrants with different ethnic orig...
متن کاملThe Intergenerational Persistence of Lifetime Earnings
This paper proposes a new method for estimating the intergenerational persistence of lifetime earnings from data that contain only short sections of individual earnings histories. The approach infers lifetime earnings persistence from the persistence of short earnings averages together with information about the stochastic process governing individual earnings. I nd that lifetime earnings are ...
